Reptile genetics and pedigree tracking

Every animal carries a recorded genotype rather than a morph name typed into a text field, so predictions come from genes and pedigrees come from real parentage.

The morph calculator itself is free on every plan, including the free Keeper plan. Saved pairings, clutches and the breeding calendar are what need Hobbyist.

Genotypes, not a morph text field

Most software stores a morph as a string. That is fine until you want to know what a pairing will produce, at which point a string cannot help you — 'Pastel Clown het Albino' has to be parsed back into genes by a human every time.

HerpSync stores the genes. Each animal carries its own genotype rows with a zygosity per gene — visual, super, het or possible het with its own percentage — and the displayed morph name is derived from them. Record '66% het Albino' and the calculator uses 0.66, not a guess.

Odds across every locus at once

A pairing is rarely one gene. The engine works per locus, combines them, and gives you both the per-gene breakdown and the full combination table — so you can see not only 'Albino 25%' but 'Pastel Albino 12.5%', which is the number that actually decides whether the pairing is worth doing.

  • Recessive, dominant and co-dominant genes with named super forms
  • Allelic series and compound hets, where two named morphs share one locus
  • Lethal super forms — the dead class is removed and the survivors renormalised
  • Sex-linked (ZW) genes, split by offspring sex
  • Polygenic traits recorded and tracked, but never given invented odds

Pedigrees and inbreeding, computed from real parentage

Sire and dam are real links between records, so ancestors and descendants are walked with a recursive query rather than typed into a family-tree picture. Wright's inbreeding coefficient is calculated for any proposed pairing and shown before you commit to it.

Because the same parentage drives holdback suggestions, an animal that would tighten your line too far can be flagged while it is still a decision rather than a clutch.

A gene library you can extend

HerpSync ships a curated, hand-authored gene dataset covering the most morph-driven species in the hobby, with inheritance mode, allelic locus, lethal and sex-linked flags on each gene. Your workspace can add its own genes on top of it for a project the published dataset does not cover yet.

The dataset is compiled in-house from herpetocultural domain knowledge and public scientific sources. It is not scraped from any marketplace.

Common questions

Can I use the morph calculator without an account?

Yes. The public morph calculator on herpsync.com is free and needs no sign-up. Inside the app the same engine runs against your own animals, so you pick two records instead of ticking genes by hand.

Does HerpSync handle possible hets?

Yes. A possible het is stored with its own probability — 66%, 50%, or whatever the pairing that produced it justifies — and that probability is carried through the odds calculation rather than rounded to a het or dropped.

Can I add a gene that isn't in the dataset?

Yes. Workspaces can contribute their own genes for their own use, with the same inheritance settings the curated dataset uses, so a new or regional project is not blocked on us adding it.
