Genetics in the notation you already write
The importer reads a genetics column in ordinary breeder notation — 'Pastel; Super Cinnamon; het Albino; 66% het Clown' — and resolves it into structured genotype rows with the morph derived. That is the difference between an afternoon and a fortnight when you are moving two hundred animals across.
A gene it does not recognise is reported rather than fatal, so one unusual entry does not stop the import.
A real spreadsheet, not a bare CSV
The downloadable template is a proper Excel workbook with sized columns, a bold header row and the instructions on the sheet itself. Import accepts either that workbook or a plain CSV, detected automatically. Export is CSV, byte-prefixed so Excel opens it correctly rather than mangling the first column.
Your data stays yours
Export is available whenever you want it, on the same plan as import. Keeping an off-platform backup of your own records is a reasonable thing to want, and nothing here is designed to make leaving difficult.
A read-only API for a custom front end
If you want a completely bespoke website rather than the built-in one, the Commercial plan exposes a read-only API with bearer keys you mint yourself, plus outbound webhooks signed with HMAC so your own systems can react when an animal is reserved or sold.
Keys are stored only as hashes and the plan is re-checked on every request rather than baked into the key, so access ends when a subscription does.

Common questions
Can I import my existing spreadsheet?
Yes, on Hobbyist and above. Download the template, paste your collection in, and upload it as either an Excel workbook or a CSV. Genetics can be written in normal breeder notation rather than one column per gene.
Can I get my data out again?
Yes, at any time, on the same plan that includes import. Animals export as a CSV that opens correctly in Excel.
Is there an API?
There is a read-only public API plus outbound webhooks on the Commercial plan, intended for breeders who want to build their own front end against their HerpSync records. There is no write API.
